The Blackout, August 2003

Hoo-boy. Katherine and I got out of work early and took a late lunch. When the lights go out in the diner, I'm thinking, "Oh great, too many people have air conditioners on," but as the details come out, I'm thinking, "Oh great, too many energy monopolies putting profits ahead over public service." After all, utilities are meant to be utilized. We foraged for fruit in the dark and ate what we could find by candlelight.

At any rate, it was a unique experience, with some sights for which photos don't do justice.

Some groceries stayed open, one customer at a time, accompanied their own "personal shopper" with a flashlight. Others apparently did what they could, then just called it a day.

A bunch of us were going fishing that weekend, so I had to get home and pack. The subways were still shut down, so I had to walk most the way from East Harlem to Park Slope. It gave me an opportunity to walk across the Manhattan Bridge, past trains frozen in time. Far from frozen was a poor transit worker who had sit in the train and guard it.
